The economy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh was built on the steel industry. However, today, the steel industry is of little importance to the city. Now the most prominent branches include robotics, high technology, nuclear engineering, healthcare, biomedical technology, finance, education, tourism, and services. The city is home to a number of very successful large corporations. These include Google, PPG Industries, Dick’s Sporting Goods, U.S. Steel, Alcoa, Thermo Fisher Scientific, FedEx Ground, Giant Eagle, Nova Chemicals, and many others. - Regent Square. This neighborhood is as close to perfect as it gets. Almost a half of it is covered in green areas. The median home value is a little less than $200,000. Crime rates are very low (almost non-existent, actually). The median household income is around $65,000. The neighborhood is home to several great grade schools and academies.
- Squirrel Hill North. Another great neighborhood, Squirrel Hill North is home to almost 15,000 residents. Homes here are a more expensive, with the median home value revolving around $400,000. The area feels pretty urban, but crime rates are still pretty low. The median household income is twice as higher than in Regent Square.
- Squirrel Hill South. Slightly larger than its northern twin, Squirrel Hill South is home to 20,000 people. This area is also slightly cheaper than Squirrel Hill North, with the median home value just slightly above $300,000. The neighborhood is quite safe, and its residents are very educated. This isn’t surprising, as the area is home to some very good schools.
- Point Breeze. Significantly smaller than Squirrel Hills, Point Breeze is home to 10,000 residents. The price range of homes is somewhat similar to Squirrel Hills South. The population is quite diverse, and children make up around 15%. Allderdice High School, one of the best high schools in Pennsylvania is located nearby.
- Friendship. This neighborhood with a lovely name is home to less than 4,000 people. An average home value in the area is slightly above $200,000, while the median rent is $830. How many times have you ordered a service and got exactly what you wanted? Not many times right?
